An Update on My Debt, My Job and More

update on what's going on

It’s been awhile since I updated you amazing three readers on what is going on in my life. Tonight felt like a good night to write up something.

I’ve been teaching part-time in an inner city middle school since September and it’s been going well. Being part-time means that I’m making decent money when you look at the hourly rate, however I’m only working 22 hours a week. Finding another part-time job is tough when so much of the boys’ extracurricular activities fall on me. I am the only one who takes them to soccer practice and week night games. I take them to Boy Scouts and will be the one taking them to music lessons (as soon as I can swing the cost for the two of them to take lessons). Taking on an evening job is just not possible.

So while I’m making money right now, it’s only just enough to pay my bills. Saving money and paying for extras is still tough.

Another reason things are tight is that I do not get paid for days I don’t teach. That means there’s no pay for Thanksgiving break, the snow day we had last week or any day I get sick (hopefully that doesn’t happen). It also means that I won’t be paid for the Winter break (cutting my budget in half next month). I’m trying to be very smart with my spending to survive these coming weeks.

I’m not sure what that means for the summer. I’m pretty worried.

I’ve been trying to get another teaching job as well. It’s still not full time but it’s more hours each week which would help me prepare for the summer. It also offers me the option to buy health insurance through the district, which would be wonderful!

On the debt front things are plugging along sloooooowly. I’m paying monthly on two accounts and recently made a $1500 payment on another (I was pretty much forced to do that), taking the balance on that one below $1000. My total credit card debt is currently sitting at less than $4000 which feels mighty good.

Of course that credit card debt pales in comparison to the student loan debt but for right now, we’ll celebrate the small victories!

I’m still plugging away at the weight loss and to date I’ve lost 65 pounds! It’s slowed down since I started teaching as I’m not working out as much as I was during the summer but I’m not gaining weight so I’m ok with that.

I’m going to try to post a bit more. I’d like to be better at it (if you’ve read this blog for any length of time then you know that I say this often and rarely follow through, I’m awesome like that. Thank the ADHD!).

Keep an eye out in the next week for a giveaway. I’ll be posting one for a $50 Walmart gift card!

Thanks for still being around. You have no idea how much I appreciate everyone who has stuck around even though I’m not a regular blogger.
